Early Life and Influences
Coleridge was born on October 21, 1772, in Ottery St. Mary, Devon. His father was a vicar, and Coleridge received a classical education at Christ's Hospital in London. During his time at Cambridge University, he became friends with the poet William Wordsworth, and together they published the seminal work of Romanticism, Lyrical Ballads (1798).
Major Works
Coleridge's most famous poems include "Kubla Khan" (1816),a dreamlike vision of an exotic palace, and "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" (1798),a haunting ballad about a sailor cursed for killing an albatross.
In addition to poetry, Coleridge also wrote extensively on literary criticism and philosophy. His major work of literary theory, Biographia Literaria (1817),explores the nature of imagination, poetry, and the role of the critic.
Legacy
Coleridge's influence on English literature is profound. His evocative language, exploration of the human psyche, and philosophical insights continue to inspire readers to this day.
Essays and Excerpts
To delve deeper into the life and works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, here are excerpts from various essays that provide valuable insights:
The Supernatural in Coleridge's Poetry
"Coleridge's supernatural is not of the vulgar kind. It is not a ghost story or a witch tale, but a shadow of the mind's own creating. It is the unreal made real, the intangible made tangible, the invisible made visible. It is not a thing of flesh and blood, but a thing of thought and imagination."
The Imagination in Coleridge's 'Biographia Literaria'
"Imagination is the power by which we combine and modify the elements of nature so as to produce something new and original. It is not mere fancy, but a creative power."
Coleridge's Philosophy of Art
"Coleridge's philosophy of art is based on the idea that the artist is a mediator between the human mind and the external world. The artist's task is to interpret the world through his own imagination and to create works of art that will evoke a similar response in the minds of others."
The Influence of Coleridge on Victorian Poetry
"Coleridge's influence on Victorian poetry is pervasive. His emphasis on the imagination, the supernatural, and the importance of emotion in art inspired a generation of poets, including Tennyson, Browning, and Rossetti."
Samuel Taylor Coleridge was a visionary poet and thinker whose works continue to captivate and inspire generations of readers. His exploration of the human psyche, the supernatural, and the nature of creativity has left an enduring legacy in English literature.
