This book is a dual biography of Lee and Grant. It explores their lives, careers, and the impact they had on the United States. The book is based on extensive research, including interviews with family members, friends, and colleagues. It is a fair and balanced account of two of the most important figures in American history.
Robert E. Lee
Robert E. Lee was born in 1807 in Stratford Hall, Virginia. He was the son of Henry Lee III, a Revolutionary War hero, and Anne Hill Carter Lee. Lee graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1829. He served in the U.S. Army for 32 years, fighting in the Mexican-American War and against Native Americans on the frontier.
In 1861, when the American Civil War broke out, Lee resigned his commission in the U.S. Army and joined the Confederate States Army. He was appointed commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, and he led his army to victory in several key battles, including the Battle of Antietam and the Battle of Gettysburg.
In 1865, Lee surrendered his army to Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. After the war, Lee returned to Virginia and became president of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University). He died in 1870.
Ulysses S. Grant
Ulysses S. Grant was born in 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio. He was the son of Jesse Root Grant, a tanner, and Hannah Simpson Grant. Grant graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1843. He served in the U.S. Army for 15 years, fighting in the Mexican-American War and against Native Americans on the frontier.
In 1861, when the American Civil War broke out, Grant resigned his commission in the U.S. Army and joined the Union Army. He was appointed commander of the Army of the West, and he led his army to victory in several key battles, including the Battle of Shiloh and the Battle of Vicksburg.
In 1864, Grant was appointed commander of all Union armies. He led his armies to victory in the Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, and the Battle of Cold Harbor. In 1865, Grant accepted Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.
After the war, Grant was elected president of the United States. He served two terms, from 1869 to 1877. During his presidency, he oversaw the Reconstruction of the South and the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment, which granted African Americans the right to vote.
Grant died in 1885 from throat cancer.
The Impact of Lee and Grant
Lee and Grant were two of the most important figures in American history. They were both brilliant military commanders who led their armies to victory in the American Civil War. They were also both complex and controversial figures who have been the subject of much debate and discussion.
Lee and Grant had a profound impact on the United States. They helped to shape the course of the Civil War, and they played a major role in the Reconstruction of the South. They were also both influential figures in the development of American military strategy and tactics.
Lee and Grant are still remembered today as two of the most iconic figures in American history. They are both revered and reviled, and they continue to be the subject of much debate and discussion. However, there is no doubt that they were both great men who had a profound impact on the United States.
This book is a comprehensive biography of two of the most important figures in American history. It is a fair and balanced account of their lives, careers, and the impact they had on the United States. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in American history.
